A small bust of a child was purchased by the Berlin museums in 1914 in exchange with the Kassel's Landesmuseum. Its history can be traced back to the XVII century, when the sculpture was in The Hague in the collection of the commander-in-chief of the Dutch fleet, Jacob Banner,Lord of Wassenaer, Lord Obdam. The collection was bought in 1750 by William VII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. The sculpture, known in several replicas, was repeatedly re-attributed: Bode, who rejected an implausible version of Vittorio Ghiberti's authorship, tentatively considered it the work of a Florentine sculptor of the late XV century. A significant resemblance to another small piece, a tilted female head attributed to the Venetian sculptor Antonio Lombardi (Modena, Estense Gallery and Berlin, Bode Museum), allows both works to be considered belonging to one workshop.
